Stacking the Shelves #2: Another Book Box Day

As you may or may not have realized, my school and student teaching has completely taking over my life for the past eight months.  So much so that I received my November order for Scholastic last week and realized I still hadn’t unboxed October’s order.  Last week, I unpacked October’s Scholastic order.  This week, I’m going to go through November’s box, which has lots of goodies for this bookworm!

Apparently November was all about the series for me.  I purchased the Percy Jackson and the OlympiansBlack Lagoon AdventuresDon’t Let the Pigeon, and There Was An Old Lady series/sets.

Now, I’ve read all of the Percy Jackson books.  However, this is the one series that was accidentally left behind in our move from Louisiana five year ago and I know I’ll never see the books again (long story).  I decided it was time for me to purchase a new copy of the first five books.  Especially since my son is finally old enough for me to try to get him interested in them.

Although I have read the series, I have not read the Percy Jackson Greek Heroes book, so expect that to hit my to be read list soon enough!  I was also pleased to receive a copy of the first book from The Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan.  The Percy Jackson and the companion series are the only Rick Riordan series I have read.  I’ve been interested in trying several of his other books, so I hope to get to this one soon enough.

I have seen the Black Lagoon Adventures around the library and classrooms for years.  This past month Scholastic had a deal on all twenty-seven books.  Normally, I don’t like to buy series that I’ve never read, but this series was a hit with my kids during student teaching.  After I saw that, I was convinced that it was worth investing in.

As an intervention specialist, I will have students with a wide range of reading skills.  Knowing this, I’ve been spending the past two years paying attention to the types of books younger elementary teachers like to incorporate with their students.  That’s how I came to find the two series pictured above.

As you can see, I have a wider range of reading levels present in the November book box.  I’ve been trying to keep incorporating a variety of books and hopefully, I’ll be able to use all of them to help my future students.  I don’t expect to change the world, but I do hope that I can help some kids find an appreciation (if not a love or passion) for reading.  Reading saved me as a child.  It helped me to deal with the way my life was and it served to help me be inspired to not let those negative experiences push me down a dark path of anger, hatred, resentment, and destruction.  So, I will work day in and day out to find ways to engage my students and hopefully help them find their way to books.

  2. That is a lot of books. I hope you love them all!

  3. I like all those books!!! That’s what I love about elementary! By the time the kids come to middle school, they are for the most part very anti-reading and it breaks my heart!

    • That’s why I want to teach 4th or 5th grade. It’s kind of the last chance to really get kids into reading. But a lot of the kids I know hate reading and it is heartbreaking because for me it was a safe haven when I was a child.
